To the Heroes Behind the Scenes: Thank You, Facilities Professionals

Years ago, I spent some time running a transport and logistics company and was always impressed with the hard work and stress that dispatchers dealt with and thought it may be one of the toughest jobs out there. Then for the past 17 years I have had the pleasure of working with facilities professionals and seeing what they have to deal with day to day, (and night) 7 days a week and think maybe they have it tougher. I realize this should have been posted on World FM Day in May (yes they have a day!) but better late than never.

Facilities professionals are the unsung heroes of every organization. While their work often goes unnoticed, it is the backbone of safety, comfort, and productivity in our schools, hospitals, offices, and public spaces. These individuals ensure that buildings function smoothly, that spaces are clean and safe, and that every light, HVAC unit, and emergency system is operational when it matters most.

Their challenges are many. They juggle aging infrastructure, shrinking budgets, and rising expectations—all while responding to emergencies, coordinating contractors, and keeping up with ever-changing regulations. From fixing burst pipes in the dead of winter to reconfiguring office layouts overnight, their days are long and their responsibilities vast. The COVID-19 pandemic only amplified their workload, demanding rapid adaptations in sanitation protocols, air filtration, and space management—much of which was done under intense pressure and with little recognition.

In today’s fast-paced world, facilities teams must also navigate the growing complexities of sustainability, technology integration, and workplace safety. Balancing energy efficiency goals with tenant comfort, adopting smart building systems, and ensuring ADA compliance are just a few of the modern demands they face.

Yet, despite these challenges, they show up every day with quiet dedication. Their work is behind every smoothly running meeting, every clean classroom, and every safe hospital corridor. They don’t often get the spotlight, but without them, nothing else would function.

So today, we say thank you. Thank you to the early risers, the night-shift workers, the problem solvers, and the planners. Thank you for your expertise, your resilience, and your commitment to making every space better. You keep our world running—literally. And we, at Daisy Energy are grateful.
