Reducing energy waste and consumption and generating renewable energy will have a significant impact on both your bottom line and the environment.

Energy Conservation (REDUCE)

Investing in energy conservation provides an excellent return on investment and will help to generate greater profitability. The following examples of ways to reduce consumption can result in significant payback for your facility.

LED Lighting Upgrades:

Upgrading your lighting to LED can save as much as 85% of your energy use. You may also be eligible for additional grants and rebates to help cover the cost of your retrofit.

Additionally, LED’s provide a significant environmental impact as they use far less energy than conventional lighting and are completely recyclable.

LED Lighting Upgrades Continued:

LED’s can also enhance employee productivity by providing brighter, more natural lighting which can boost mood and improve performance.

If you are looking to benefit from lower energy usage along with better quality lighting, then an LED retrofit is your best option. Between the savings, increased productivity and available rebates, many businesses see a return on their investment in as little as two years. The benefits of better lighting, however, are noticeable right away and many of our clients tell us that if they had realized the difference that LEDs were going to make in light quality alone, they would have done their retrofit sooner.

Energy Sub-metering:

Since we started helping clients with their energy management needs, we have found that many companies have no idea how they consume energy. Without that knowledge, they have no way to manage their energy costs.

Energy sub-metering empowers facility managers to monitor and control their energy spend. Low cost and simple to use, sub-metering provides real-time and historical energy consumption data in a global enterprise-wide format. It also provides the ability to drill down to circuit level consumption to identify areas of waste and problems in real-time.

Global Adjustment/Demand Charge Reduction:

Demand charges and Global Adjustment (GA) charges for large energy users (Class A or 500kW+) can make up over 70% of their electrical bill. Demand refers to the peak kW’s required to operate your facility which is also used to calculate your portion of the Global Adjustment. By reducing peaks, you can lower your monthly costs significantly.

While some loads can be retrofitted to reduce consumption (eg. lighting, HVAC, etc.) others like production equipment cannot be so easily addressed. In those cases, peak busting or demand reduction technologies are the answer. Daisy Energy, along with our partner AVL Manufacturing, can help to lower your Global Adjustment charges with the ECO-H hybrid energy storage system (ESS). Developed in Canada, this technology allows facilities to save hundreds of thousands of dollars each month in GA charges by flattening their peaks. The Hybrid ESS eliminates the need for a Connection Impact Assessment (CIA) as it is able to disconnect from the grid in nanoseconds and operate as an independent microgrid for as long as the peak period lasts. The proprietary software that allows for this also allows for integrating solar PV for even more savings.

HVAC and Lighting Controls:

Properly installed and maintained HVAC and lighting controls can eliminate a lot of wasted energy. While many older BAS systems have controls for lighting and HVAC, they have become obsolete and in need of upgrading or re-commissioning to reduce your consumption and carbon footprint. New technologies that are less costly than BAS systems provide the same benefits in controlling lighting and HVAC with real-time reporting and monitoring. Daisy Energy works with many of the top suppliers of these controls and can help you in selecting and installing the product that’s right for your application.

Renewable Energy (PRODUCE):

Reducing energy waste and upgrading to more efficient equipment is a great way to take control of your energy costs. A renewable energy system like solar Photovoltaic (PV) power will help you take back control of your energy costs. In addition, reducing your carbon footprint will also demonstrate a commitment to the environment to your clients. Not only will solar PV drive down your consumption from the grid, it will lower your peaks and demand charges resulting in lower Global Adjustment (GA) charges. Solar PV also pairs very well with energy storage systems to further reduce GA charges. The cost of a solar PV system has come down significantly over the past few years with kWh costs at or below current grid costs.

Net Metering:

Net metering is the best way to take advantage of Solar PV in Ontario. It allows you to use as much of the solar energy as you can and send any excess back to the grid for credits, resulting in a “net” charge. It is important to size your PV system properly to avoid sending too much power back to the grid as you are not allowed to produce more than you can consume in a given 12 month period. In Ontario, the maximum array size of 500kW’s has been eliminated which makes net metering even more attractive as larger systems can deliver a lower per watt cost. A solar array will typically operate with little or no maintenance over a 25-30 year period, providing clean reliable energy with no rate increases over the life of the system.

Off-Grid Power:

Off-grid power combines solar PV with energy storage to allow a facility to operate independently from the grid. While not always practical for large energy users, it can be reliably employed in small to medium-sized facilities with the addition of a back-up LNG generator. Going off-grid is becoming more popular as energy costs rise and grid interruptions become more common. Having your own reliable source of electricity keeps you safe from pricing uncertainty and keeps your lights on when the grid is down. Our off-grid solar light poles are being used as a reliable alternative in countries susceptible to grid failure due to poor infrastructure and natural disasters.
